I’m an Indiana guy, born and raised. I’ve lived in a few places over time, but have a fondness for the midwest, not everything, but a lot of it. I love many of the cities in the midwest for various reasons.
Let’s look at a few (not nearly all) of the interesting people that are from the Midwest:
David Letterman. Ball State Alum. Former Weatherman. Comic Genius.
Via Fort Wayne, Carole Lombard. Legend. Former love of Clark Gable.
Fairmount’s James Dean. Giant. If you ever go to Fairmount, his gravesite, childhood home, the place where he bought his motorcycle, his church and the museum are all on one street.
David Lee Roth. Martial Arts Fanatic. Gift of Gab. Paramedic. Worldly. Smart. Quintessential Rock Singer.
Michael Jackson. King of Pop. All of the Jackson’s hail from Gary.
Seymour’s John Mellencamp. Opinionated. Does whatever he damn well wants.
CHICAGO and Illinois
Sam Cooke just may be my favorite r&b singer ever. It’s either him or Marvin Gaye. Sam was smooth. Immensely talented. Great songs. Timeless.
Rockford’s Cheap Trick. Always great.
DETROIT and Michigan
Bob Seger. One of the guys that defines great storytelling rock & roll. Tom Petty is someone that does the same thing for me. Excellent.
Aretha Franklin. Queen of Soul. I dig all the r&b stuff from the Motor City. All of the Motown artists are special: Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Smokey, Temps, 4 Tops etc. I love this stuff so much.
George Clinton can bring the monstrous funk.
Iggy Pop and The Stooges. One of the great pioneers of punk.
Jack White. Unique. Brilliantly crafted art. I dig his solo stuff, the White Stripes, The Raconteurs, The Dead Weather…all of it. Although, he spends a lot of time in Nashville, Detroit is where he’s from.
The Replacements. One of my favorite bands ever.
Soul Asylum. Great guys. Talented.
Morris Day and The Time.
